Missouri’s Partner Headcount Growth Has Fallen Behind Similarly Sized Legal Markets

Missouri growth lands at the lower end of US legal markets of a similar size, having seen overall stagnant growth in Partner headcount at +0%. Only Michigan fell below Missouri at -1%.

Most Larger Practice Areas Have Had Stagnant Growth or are Losing Partners

Real Estate (-3% Partner headcount), Corporate (-1%) and Insurance (-1%) come just behind Litigation (+1%) as the most populated practice areas for law firms in Missouri. Yet, they have all seen a decline in headcount.


Tax (
+4%) practices saw the highest percentage growth.

Movement Into and Out of Missouri Has Been Concentrated in Neighboring States

Illinois was the most common destination for Partners leaving Missouri, making up 45% of departures from the State. Illinois was also the second most common source of Partners moving into Missouri, with 3 Partners making this trip in the last year.


Kansas was the most popular source and second most popular destination for Partners in Missouri, with 4 moving out to Kansas and 5 moving in from the state.
