In our UK city leaderboard series, we look at the law firms with the largest partner headcount and strongest recent headcount growth in each UK city. Here are the firms leading the way in the London legal market.


London's Partner Headcount Growth Sits in the Middle of Major UK Markets

London saw modest partner growth over the last year at +1%, behind Bristol (+4%) and Edinburgh (+2%), but faster than other major markets like Manchester (+0%).

Winston Taylor, McDermott Will & Schulte, Hogan Lovells Cadwalader and Ashurst Perkins Coie all completed mergers during this period. Growth figures for these firms include partners who joined the largest pre-merger firm through those mergers.


Keystone Law holds the largest partnership in London at 366.5 partners, and made 42 lateral hires over the year, more than any other firm in the city. Keystone operates a consultancy model, which accounts for both the scale of its partnership and the volume of its hiring.


Kirkland & Ellis promoted 24.5 partners, more than double its 11.5 lateral hires, and more than any other London firm. It also recorded the most exits of any firm in the city, at 32.

Tax Was the Fastest Growing Practice in London

Tax (+4%) grew most of all major practice areas in London over the last year.


Litigation remains London's largest practice at 3,170 partners, and was flat over the period at +0%.

Dubai Was the Most Common Destination of London Partner Moves

Dubai was the most common destination for departing London partners, with 13 arriving there over the year, accounting for 7% of all London departures. Bristol was second, taking 12 partners from the capital.



13 partners have made the journey from Manchester to London since July 2025, the largest number from any single city, followed by 11 from Leeds and 9 each from Bristol and Birmingham.

PE and Investment Firms Accounted for 9 of 10 Top Client Relationships Across London's Top Ten Firms

Brookfield appears as a client at six of London's ten highest ranked firms, on 251 public matters in total, more than any other client. Blackstone follows on 200 matters across six firms, then KKR and Bain Capital on 163 each.



Kirkland & Ellis holds the single largest relationship, with Bain Capital on 148 public matters worked by 71 of the firm's lawyers.
